Uttarakhand is one of the most beautiful and inspiring regions of North India. With mesmerizing natural beauty, the northern part of the state is covered by the Gigantic Himalayan ranges while the lower areas are governed with pastures and dense forests. Another name for this scenic state is “Devbhumi” meaning the Abode of the Gods, with several highly venerated pilgrimage places. Each hilltop houses a temple or a shrine, which are considered very sacred by the locals. Hence this state nourishes an assorted culture and monuments of historical emphasis. People are associated with spirituality, temples, pilgrimage and mountain tourism. It is truly a paradise on earth alluring everyone from everywhere. The concept of this design evolved around the idea of Depicting State’s identity in building complex. Location was deliberately selected as Rishikesh since it is considered as a Gateway to the Himalayas. This building serves as a portal to consign the experience of Cultural wealth through sculptures, replicas of important shrines, folk-art, folk-lore, folk-music and dances. A Museum not only houses the antiques but evokes a sense of pride/sense of belonging, it also renders services as information and learning center for the visitors and tourists. A 125 Mtr. x 80 Mtr. site with a gently sloping terrain, overlooking onto the Himalayas is extensively designed by implementing the strategies and ideologies. The most distinctive feature of the museum is its pyramidal shape that depicts and is inspired by the Himalayan Mountain Range, the structure is further topped with an elegantly designed glass skylight that depicts the snow peaks and also brings in great amount of diffused natural light to light up the interiors. The museum block is entered with a meticulously planned entrance foyer and landscaped greens. On entering the museum block, the visitor is welcomed with a lavishly designed entrance lobby that directs us to the Archeological Gallery and Shrine Gallery on either of the sides. A corridor leads to the staircase and services block which provides us the access to the upper floors that houses Ethnography Gallery and Himalayan Heritage Gallery on First Floor, Zoological Gallery and Performing Arts Gallery on the Second Floor and a Service Block on the Terrace. Other amenities like Library & Documentation Centre, Museum Media Centre, Conference Hall, Cafeteria, Thematic Spaces, Amphitheatre, Curio Shops, Open Display Platforms & Parking facilities are designed rationally to serve their respective purpose. Yet another notable feature is that the buildings are designed with dedicated space for traditional arts & crafts of Uttarakhand such as Wooden Carved Panels, Stonework, ‘Paithal’ (Slatestone) Roof Cladding, ‘Aipan’ wall panels of Kumaon fame etc., making it a sensible and context responsive design making visitor intrigued to know more about the State.
