The focus towards creating a functional 21st-century resort within the early 19th-century Garh (building) guided us to use traditional ornamental geometry, interior elements, local materials and details to enhance the old world architecture. Internally Jharokhas (balconies), railings and arches were restored to their original form, character and glory while giving them a contemporary function. The plan was an amalgamation of multiple old chambers to create spacious and well-lit individual suites, whereby none of the two suites are similar in layout thus creating a sense of exploration. The interiors crafted within the existing structure was planned to allow for optimum use of the space while articulation of architectural elements in their original manner. Junctions are emphasised, like punctuation marks, with sandstone features, white marble, sheesham wood and detailing such as fluted columns, curvaceous brackets, bungree (foliated arches), jalis (screens), bollards etc. Fresco paintings were specially planned to adorn the common spaces for the visitors - preserved and spread this antique art in a live form through the local skilled craftsmen. The attempt was also to work out a ceiling with lighting and air-conditioning that retained the character of the high ceiling space and complimented the more opulent scale of Garh without any false ceiling. High ceiling also increases comfort levels in extreme climate of the region further supported by two internal courtyards. The lounge, polo bar and dining hall have been designed as unique spaces in the heritage precinct of Jaipur region. Our endeavour was to accentuate these as tastefully opulent spaces that draws from several different local crafts and traditions of Rajasthan. Built space provided us with its inherent classicism with arches and stone columns, all of which were discovered, retained and restored. The attached bath within each suite was created as clean lines with local white marble stone, naturally lit having large openings and mirror/ glass surfaces whereby each element introduced has been custom designed and incorporates craft, sometimes in a more contemporary functional avatar. The traditional weaves have been designed into the furnishings along with the chandeliers and hanging light fixtures which exemplify the constant dialectic between the old and the new.
