Uttarakhand Sanskrit Academy was established in 2002 with the objective to make Sanskrit language regain its ancient glory in the holy land of Uttarakhand. Situated in the beautiful city of Haridwar, we designed the auditorium for Sanskrit Academy to host around 500 participants for various national and international events. This design adds value to the historic architectural aspect whereby all the contemporary set of requirements of an auditorium were planned to be encased within its traditional envelope contextually. The circular arches and triangular pediments emerge as an image of Colonial style of Architecture prevalent in the Institutional Architecture of the State. The intervention is an attempt to create a temporal dialogue where the ancient culture and current geographical context meets future contemporary requirements. Therefore, we see, the amalgamation of Architecture with the rich physical and metaphysical context takes place in an emblematic way. The design vocabulary is neat and simplistic with one single entry serving as main entrance with a covered foyer fronted with beautiful landscape. Two exits are provided nearing the main stage for easy accessibility and for audience to spill over during intervals or breaks. The recessed openings help in maintaining shade throughout the day. This Auditorium building stands out as a cultural landmark that reflects the Architectural identity and heritage of the city of Haridwar.
