With noble teachings of Swami Vivekananda and his thoughts, The Vivekananda Vedanta Society in Chicago with a purpose of building a Universal temple had purchased 15 acres of verdant land in the Village of Homer Glen. The site carries a natural look as it is partially covered with woods wherein five acres of stately oaks and other trees lie to the North-Central part. The site selection happened with an intention of enhancing the feeling of entering the realm of divinity. Here, we see a south faced shrine fronted with a designed landscape walkway serving as a main entrance to the site. The overall form of the temple depicts a cruciform form to support activities around the main Chapel. The main structure is deliberately divided into two levels, Chapel and Shrine on the Upper-Level and on the Lower-Level Dining and Performance Hall are provided. The main North-South Axis is reserved for the Shrine and Chapel. With an entrance lobby on two levels, the upper lobby houses a permanent exhibition space. The thought process around material selection and construction techniques fuels with the ideals of sustainability and adaptation of local style of Architecture. The 500 seat Chapel is a rectangle of 64’ width x 96’ length, which is sited to overlook the woods. The North end of the Chapel houses the shrine. The Chapel has a high roof over the nave and lower roofs over the aisles. The higher roof allows for clerestory windows which bring in an Eastern/Asian influence. The Temple consists of one primary dome and four secondary domes over the Shrines that are modelled on the main domes. We experience the hint of Palladian Architecture in the proportions of the columns and colonnades. Prairie Style architectural language is rendered on the front wings. The stone Torana with a symbol of Sri Ramakrishna Math defines the main entry where we come across a striking feature which carries symbols of all the major religions of the world. The exterior of the temple is dressed with a stone base and a brick/stone masonry upper band. A commendable skill of rich carving details on stone can be seen on colonnade, Chapel windows, decorated domes and roof tops. The epoch-making features like the Cruciform Plan, the Domes, the double overhanging roofs on the Chapel, The Palladian style of architecture for columns and colonnades and the Prairie Style on the front wings communicates with a new architectural vocabulary in essence, "One that will demonstrate acceptance and welcome people of all faiths to the Universal Temple."
