The project objective was to set up the research, training and marketing Institute for the Sericulture Industry in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. The main entrance court therefore was designed as a semi covered central space within the site which clearly divides the building into two zones – Zone One as the Marketing + Training Block with a strong public interface and Zone Two as Administration + Workshop Block as per research parameters. The Ground Floor Level of the Marketing Block was further enhanced in terms of access for the visitors having a dedicated entrance. Spaces for Workshops were designed and detailed for weaving to be done on the fly shuttle pit looms where the weaver would interlace the silk threads of weft and warp. The increased height requirements for the workshops as per the looms and supply/ storage requirements of raw material prompted us to strategically locate those in the sunken ground floor with offices/ support administrative functions on the upper floors. The functional requirements of connecting the Training Block and Administrative Block within the two buildings was achieved with a distinctive bridge feature marking the entrance court to the complex with the objective to blur the boundaries of indoors and outdoors. On the upper floors we planned for silk museum, laboratory and design studio along with conferencing facility, cafeteria and cabins of the management. ‘From Soil to Silk’ - the exteriors of the building are cladded with brick tiles to enhance the usage of natural material within the well-designed interconnected landscape courts along with usage of north facing glass facade for deep penetration of natural light giving building a modish look.
